A Wells Fargo customer has reportedly lost nearly $100,000 after receiving a call from a fraudster posing as a bank employee.

The victim says he received a call from a scammer named David who claimed to work at the bank and warned of a fraudulent $1,000 charge on his account, reports ABC4 News.

After fixing the supposed problem, David convinced the victim to “run a CPU” and “clean things up” on his personal computer, a service that would cost him $10,000.

The man wired the funds through his bank, but added an extra zero by mistake, transferring $100,000. When he reached out to David and asked him to return the funds, the scammer actually returned the money within hours.

But the next day, the victim found out that $98,900 had been siphoned from a separate Wells Fargo account.

The bank says the funds were sent in two transactions: one $50,000 transfer and a second worth $48,900. Wells Fargo says it did not initiate the movement of funds.

David called the victim again, saying the “CPU was running slow.” But after being confronted about the missing funds, the thief replied, “Everything is legit, and the money will show back up in your account.”

Police say they’re investigating what happened and currently do not have any suspects.
